Blog Post #11 - Print Advertisement
What does the ad reveal about the cultural/
social/ or historical context of its production?
-
Historically India is a poor country. Socially it is
uncommon for girls of Hirabai’s age to continue schooling.
-
Culturally, Indian girls are expected to leave school and
start a family when they hit puberty, which is most likely the reason
‘childfund” have used a girl of 14 in this ad. From the ad, it insinuates that
“childfund” has helped to prevent cultural traditions that the audience see to
be negative from prevailing.
According to the ad, what values or
characteristics are the most important?
-
The organization values girls’ safety and
their education.
-
The
organization want to reduce poverty and improve gender equality.
-
They value the ability to read. Without the ability to
read English the viewer will be unable to process the information.
-
Hirabai’s is happy in the ad as she is smiling. Happy is
not a product, but it is a journey, therefore making us think that she is happy
for her future as “future” is written at the top of the page in large capitals
Who is empowered in this commercial? Who is
ignored or marginalized? For what reason?
-
Poor
boys are ignored in this ad whilst girls are being empowered as they are less
likely to have the threat of having no education.
-
It
consistently mentions safety, but never explains how she will be safer using a
bike on the same exact roads. Perhaps she would have less chance being attacked
using a bike as transport as she will be moving quicker.
-
Green uniform
(symbol of life/bright future) and tan background(dead) – leaving dead behind
-
It
excludes: blind people, girls who don’t want to go to university, illiterate
people, boys, disabled people (can’t ride a bike).
The points that you mentioned were well thought out, however remember to structure them in an organised manner, rather than stating them in bullet point format. You manage to include all the aspects of what the question were asking and justified it with evidence from the text and also mentioned the use of symbolism as well. Nice work
ReplyDeleteThis post is well organized in terms of presenting clear points for each of the three questions. I definitely agree that girls in general are more empowered than boys in this ad. Good points are also made within explaining the context and values of the ad!
